Matteo Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
